Your Principal

I am honored and delighted to have completed seven years as West Point's principal.  It has been a wonderful learning experience.  I marveled every day at the commitment that I saw among our staff as well as our students.  We all worked very hard to "bring out the best" in West Point's students, every day.

Experience
I taught in the Hempfield School District for 20 + years.  However, those years were interrupted, as I stayed home for 12 years to be a "stay-at-home-mom" to my three children.  I have taught Kindergarten, second, third, and fifth grade.  I was also Head teacher at West Point for three years, prior to becoming principal.

Education
I received my Early Childhood certification and Bachelor of Arts Degree from Seton Hill University.  In May, 2005, I earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and elementary certification from Seton Hill University.  I received my K-12 principal certification through Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in October 2010.    I believe in providing an education for students that will meet the needs of various abilities in the classroom.  As an educator, one must nurture and encourage the slower child, stimulate the abilities of the average child, and challenge the gifted child to perform beyond the norm as his/her ability allows.  Education today must also include a discipline program, which is firm and evident, but flexible enough to allow spontaneity and excitement to occur in the classroom.  Thirdly, in a world where “family” has no set definition, our educational system must provide compassion and concern for the various extraneous needs of our young people.  We must lend an “open ear” to their problems and provide guidance or direct them to the guidance programs within the educational system.  To insure the continued growth of the teacher, I believe all teachers should periodically attend staff developments within the district in addition to attending workshops outside the district, to keep current on new and improved methods of instruction and avoid losing the “spark” that ignites the desire in children to want to learn and come to school.

Family and interests
I am married to Dave Dell, who is recently retired from the sheet metal trade.  Together, we have three children.  Brad is 38 and Director of Theater at Iowa State University. Missy is 35 and recently received her secondary education certificate in history, in Denver, Colorado.  She has made us grandparents, so I have Austin and Melanie to visit in Superior, Colorado, every chance I can get. Brian, 32, is a graduate of Slippery Rock University, and recently received his MBA from Robert Morris University.  He is working in Hicksville, Ohio, as Plant Manager of Hillandale eggs.  I love to read, run, and play golf when time permits. I also help to support Girls on the Run at West Point Elementary School and our Relay for Life team, West Point Warriors!
